Yes, We Still Do 2D

Regardless of how good we become with 3D CAD there will always be the need for 2D drawings. Even if it is just a personal preference and/or even regardless of the expense.

As one of the first all aluminum crew boats built on the Gulf Coast the construction drawings for this Breaux Bay Craft from the 1960's were long gone. But, the desire to convert it into a private yacht by the new owner weren't. Arriving in Galveston after being salvaged from a now defunct project overhaul to turn it into a sight-seeing whale watcher, the boat was soon dry-docked in Kennedy's yard and ready.

Our first chore was to blueprint what already existed and then to meet with the owner to determine what he wanted to do. Spending days crawling through the spaces taking measurements and photo's we produced the 2D CAD drawings to use as our starting point. After several late night meetings with the owner we then generated a new layout based on those requirements. The big surprise came when he indicated that he wanted to build this yacht using surplus aluminum stock and items bought at auction yards.

Taking Measurements - Then Lofting the Mega-Yacht - © 2006 - C.R. Watson, Watson EnterpriseWhether it's 2D or 3D design or digital painting or video animations, we've proven over and again to be a valuable asset to individual clients who haven't quite decided what they want and for those who are not ready to dive into the engineering of their project.

One important aspect of MarineImaging is about being able to take a shortcut through the "study plan" stage by constructing dimensionally accurate parts and lofting them into an assembly to help clients visualize the end result. To achieve our goals we offer
  • OVERALL FLEXIBILITY
  • FAST TURNAROUND
  • PROPRIETARY AGREEMENTS
  • DIMENSIONAL ACCURACY
  • NATIVE AUTOCAD PRODUCTS
  • REALISTIC VIEWS
  • SITE SPECIFIC REPRESENTATION
  • MULTIPLE OUTPUT OPTIONS

Reverse Engineering 3D Concepts
These next two conceptual designs are dimensionally accurate, but currently have no 2D drawings. They were built directly in the 3D program with the main goal being to develop the look and feel of the vessel BEFORE developing engineering and part blueprints. Using the core files we can still reverse engineer and extract dimensioned parts such as the frame drawings at any time if and when needed. (More views available on our Examples page.)

Conceptual Components
For the 30-50 foot open fishers a custom console and leaning post can mean the difference between a day of fun - or hours of hunting for gear and bait. The side hatch allows access to a small day head inside the console and handrails allow a secure walk-around in heavy seas. The elevated gage panel shows engine temp, rpm, and critical systems information at a glance. A live bait tank is placed in just the right position for easy access and double side trays present trolling baits and tackle without having to deal with loose boxes sliding all over. The subsequent 4 pictures from our visit to the Kemah In-Water Boat Show in September indicates other ideas we can work from.

Major Overhaul and Refit Planning

Identifying section to be removed and extended. © 2006 - C.R. Watson, Watson EnterprisesAfter determining that someone had lost the "as-built" blueprints the shipyard owner subcontracted with us to help determine what the owner wanted.

We invested several days doing our own measurements and constructed a model of the existing boat, then, re-constructed the areas of concern using our 3D modeling techniques. Providing 2-3 optional layouts per day we delivered them faster than the agent could present them.
